Richmond Air Show - 2006

We went to the Richmond Air Show this year and these images are a small sample of my captures. They have all been cropped - the Spitfire and Meteor fairly significantly.

Rally New Zealand - 2006

These shots are from my recent trip to the Rally of New Zealand. This was the penultimate round of the 2006 World Rally Championship. The top 2 were taken with my Canon 300D and using my newly acquired 100mm-300mm EF USM Zoom lens and the one at the bottom used the famous "Kit lens" - 18mm-55mm EFS USM.

More of my work - Sydney Motor Show 2005

These pictures are from the Sydney Motor Show of 2005. Taken with my current camera gear. Canon EOS300D and with the EF18-55mm Zoom that came with the camera.

I took this shot on my daughter's Olympus C740Z. I think it is a pretty impressive shot from what really is what I call a PHD camera. That's "Press Here Dummy". Trial and error and the ability to check the pictures as I went helped tremendously to get the camera to give me the shots I wanted. The Olympus C740z has a 10x Optical zoom and a 3.2 megapixel resolution. Pretty good specs for a basic camera.
And this is where my interest in photography really began to blossom. It was one of those "spur of the moment" shots taken with my very first 35mm format camera. This was a Canon QL17 with fixed lens. I was driving west towards Inverell at the close of day and crested a brow to find this. I was well down the road and had to back the car up out of the shot. I didn't even turn the car off. I grabbed the camera, jumped out hit the trigger and went on my way. In those days I had to wait something like 2 weeks for the slides to return to know whether in fact anything I had shot was successful - there were a lot that weren't!
Sometimes almost by accident, I got some pearlers.

This image is nearly 40 years old - it was taken by me in 1969

The image has been scanned from the original colour slide.

It's amazing what you find on a trip!
This (and a heap of other classics including 5 300SL Gullwing Mercedes Benzes!) was parked at Derwent Bridge. I also met up with the great Doug Nye who was co driving for Paul Vestey in his Ferrari 250 California Spyder.

And these are from our trip to Tasmania late in 2004. I bought the 300D a matter of days before we left and so these were some of my very first shots with it. Most of them were with the settings to "Auto". I decided to let the camera do its thing rather than mess up the shots from this trip. There's something about the first one that I like. It's at Constitution Dock in Hobart (where the Sydney to Hobart fleet srrives - but on the other side).

These are some rally pictures from the final ARC round at Bathurst last October. They were all taken with the 300D and with the kit lens (55-200mm zoom). This was the first opportunity I had to see what the lens and camera combination was capable of in the forest. I have a lot more - these are probably the best ones. Some have been cropped a little (I sometimes do that to make a better shot - I usually try to allow for some post shoot processing).

The bottom one is Greg Carr in one of the famous BDA Escorts at the 1978 Southern Cross Rally. It was taken with my AE-1 and with an FD 70-210 Lens.
I have scanned the image from a 35mm transparency. The one at the top is either Carr or Bondy in another of the BDAs. This shot is from the Castrol International Rally - probably 1978 0r 1979 - which has become the Rally of Canberra and used the same camera gear. Also scanned from a tranny.

Welcome to Hilly's Pix

These are a few of my pictures. The captions will give you some idea of where and when and with what equipment they were taken. Please feel free to comment. I am always able to learn something from others.
